Linings and bases in restorations in posterior teeth at the undergraduate Clinic of the Restorative Dentistry in Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UC-RD-FOUBA)

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the use of bases and linings (Bs-Ls) in posterior restorations at the UC-RD-FOUBA.

Methods: A Google Forms (F) form was developed and validated in small groups to collect and  systematize the information recorded by students during the restorative activity at the end of each session. The cutoff date was 4/2023 - 5/2025. Based on the responses obtained, the frequency of Class I and II posterior restorations, the use of Bs-Ls in each restoration, and the use of Bs-Ls in endondontically treated teeth (ETT) restorations were evaluated. Data were analyzed using rates (95%CI) and Chi-square test. Results: Of the 866 restorations reported during the study period, 46.42% (43.13% - 49.75%) were posterior restorations. Among them, the majority 62.69% (57.86-67.28) were Class I (C1), and 37.31% (32.72-42.14) were Class II (C2). In 71.33% (63.63-77.97) of C2, and in 84.13% (79.11-88.13) of C1, Rs-Ls were not used. When they were used, some type of glass ionomer (VI) was used in 82.05% (67.33-91.03) of C1; 65.12% (50.18-77.60) of C2, respectively; and in the remainder, a self-mixing, self-curing composite. A statistically significant association was found between the type of material chosen and the EET condition (p<0.01). Conclusions: Within the framework of this study, it is possible to affirm that more than 70% of C2 injuries and 80% of C1 injuries did not require the use of filling materials or lining.
