Abstract

Objective: To obtain Cannabis sativa extracts rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, and to evaluate their antibiofilm activity on dental surfaces and cytotoxicity for the formulation of an experimental mouthwash.

Methods: Extracts will be obtained from a non-psychoactive variety rich in cannabidiol, prioritizing the extraction of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. These will be characterized through fractioning, chromatography, spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Biofilm activity will be analyzed by exposing the extracts to Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans biofilms formed in microplates. Cytotoxicity will be assessed via MTT assay using 3T3 fibroblasts. Finally, an experimental mouthwash will be formulated based on alcohol, copolymers, and essential oils with the addition of the extracts and evaluated on dental pieces.

Expected Results: A preliminary pharmaceutical formulation of a mouthwash based on Cannabis sativa extracts is expected, with antibiofilm activity, low or no cytotoxicity, and activity on ex vivo dental pieces.
