Abstract
Objectives. To establish the criteria that define the dental care model and the activities that make it up. Method. Narrative review of institutional documents and reference authors that analyze the oral health care model. The review included written and/or electronic sources from PubMed, Timbó, SciELO and Cochrane Library, with no restrictions on year or type of study using the descriptors: model of care, clinical protocols, prevention, restorative dentistry, dental surgery, clinical teaching. Development. The criteria and indicators of the preventive care model in Dentistry were reviewed. The formative role of Restorative Dentistry, its curricular insertion, the changes undergone according to the different paradigms and the challenges for training committed to prevention, comprehensive care and the real needs of the population were explored. Discussion. The care model is analyzed according to the conception of different authors and the contribution of restorative dentistry in accordance with the directives of Minimal Intervention Dentistry, which allowed the development of an original proposal for a matrix of indicators for the evaluation of preventive-care models. Conclusions. The model of preventive-care care, a fundamental axis of the curricular trajectory in dentistry, seeks to train dentists with a comprehensive approach to health, however, its effectiveness is limited by various factors. It is essential that universities, services and management bodies work together to design and implement strategies that generate a sustainable impact on the oral health of communities.
